Dickey Betts - Stormy Monday Cover
Просмотров 10 тыс.Год назад
Dickey Betts played a near perfect solo on the blues chestnut "Stormy Monday" at Fillmore East. Incredible dynamics, tone, articulation, phrasing, etc. Here's my take on it. Thanks to Kemper amps for helping me get the tone. The signal path was my 2018 R9 Les Paul with stock pickups directly into the Kemper. I found a profile called “plexi cranked” from a user named “And44” that sounded fanta...
Jerry Garcia Tones On A Kemper Profiler

Sorry I've been MIA for a while now folks. I promise I'm in the midst of getting the channel back up and running! Here's some vintage Jerry Garcia tones to tide you over while I'm creating more content. This was done on a Kemper profiler using a '64 Fender Twin profile. I just messed with the knobs til I got the tone pretty close. Thanks to HighCountryGuitar for the backing track! The solo is f...

Sunday Morning With A 1934 National

If you've never played a real National Resophonic instrument, you should definitely put that on your bucket list. It's an experience like no other. This particular specimen is a 1934 Duolian that was recently resorted by Carter Vintage in Nashville. It belongs to my good friend Rick who was kind enough to let me babysit it for a while. It's strung with heavy gauge flatwounds, has gobs of patina...

When I started playing the mandolin in 1996 it was entirely because of a longhaired California hippie named David Grisman. I had heard The David Grisman Quintet’s debut album from 1977 during my freshman year at Virginia Tech and it forever changed my life. That was my first exposure to Grisman’s self-styled “Dawg music”, an eclectic blend of bluegrass, gypsy jazz and traditional Jewish music, ...

When I was 11 years old, I went on a Boy Scout camporee with my Dad. On the way home we stopped at a truck stop for lunch and he bought me three "Greatest Hits" tapes, all of which had a huge impact on my impressionable young brain: Jim Croce, Ray Stevens, and Roger Miller. All were great, said Dad, but “Roger Miller is The King and don’t you forget it.” And I didn’t. I’ve been a huge Roger Mil...

My thought about the two of them was always this… Duane would circle around the hornets nest and decide where the best place to attack would be and Dickie would just stick his head right in the middle of it. It’s like Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane playing with Miles Davis. They are dissimilar players with similar talent…. But it is definitely a joy to listen to them wind up! I saw them three times before Duane died and they just fed off each other and that was the secret.

It's amazing how much of this is blues once you slow it down. Similar to how Robben Ford fuses blues and jazz so effortless, I think Tony could do the same with bluegrass and his other influences. These players have gotten to a level where they just obliterate the rules and barriers, yet they know the rules well enough to remain rooted in a structure/tradition - making their music both fresh and familiar.

I enjoy how Dickey Betts brings in deep hill country and bluegrass themes to his blues based solos and song writing. I guess that’s just how it was done to create the country rock sound. Looking back with musicians like Dickey on the scene it was 100% predictable. I want to thank him and all the other innovators who played honestly what came to them from their traditions when they were first drawn to rock and role. Now in its full splendor for some time, country rock moves and excites music lovers all over the world with such hot, lovely, bluesy and lyrical American sounds. They accomplished that musical achievement by integrating Black and White American traditional music. They did it playing on the road where they had to manage the challenges of where to stay and where to eat when social conditions split the bands up by race during meal and bed times. The music they brought along was awkward in segregated venues but at integrated venues it was embraced by the kids finding a whole lot more in common musically that got them increasingly hanging out together where they got to know and appreciate each other better. Country rock greatly improved the quality of race relations in America, which in turn further enriched and energized the sound. Dickey and friends knew what they were doing and by doing it gave us a better world to live in. RIP Dickey, thanks for the music.

Duane himself acknowledged that Dicky was the schtizzle, the---that's THE guitarist extraordinaire of the band. "I've gotten the fame, but he's the much better man on the fretboard." (Not exactly the quote, but essentially the meaning.) Similarly, Jimi Hendrix said the same of Terry Kath. (They were planning to tour together.) Things that might have been, sigh. . . . But, thank you Dickey Betts, you made my own journey all these times around the sun, more bearable, and so many times, moments of sheer joy.
